Class One

Project Description:

For our first class, students created their own 3D pieces depicting their favorite foods using various materials: tissue paper, cardboard, construction paper, etc. We began by defining what 3D art means- creating an art piece that has width, height and depth. Then we had a brief discussion about our favorite foods which led to a discussion about materials and how materials can be folded, crumpled, cut, glued and shaped to form our desired food.  Each teacher showed example pieces along with sketches to show the planning and ideation to demonstrate various foods and how they were created. Students sketched their food and explored with materials to make 3D pieces. This was a fun project to get to know students on the first day through their favorite foods.

Essential Understanding

The essential understanding for this project is for students to explore forming and shaping 3D objects with various materials. Problem solving from ideation to creation is also an essential understanding in this project. These skills will be the base to build on for following projects.

Intended Outcomes

  • Students will be able to sketch ideas for their project and explain them.

  • Students will be able to choose materials that best fir their ideas.

  • Students will be able to make food that tells us something about themselves.

  • Students will be able to talk about their material choice and how they were used.

Skills

The skills the students are working towards are:

  • Planning out project

  • Problem solving from ideation to creation

  • Forming and shaping 3D objects with various materials

  • Engage in discussion of ideas and of final project

  • Expression of self through creation

Demonstrations

This student wanted to create her favorite treat. Cake. She used sponge for the cake texture, and glue, cut, and shaped them into a cake form. She then create purple icing that she mixed with glue and a bit of soap to create a bright, tasty, icing. Then, she cut up pipe clears for the sprinkles, and topped it with clear hot glue for another layer of clear icing.

The student wanted to create her favorite breakfast treat, pancakes. She used cardboard for the form of the pancakes, and then topped the with butter squares, which were also made out of cardboard. The student then used yellow and brown paint, mixed with glue to create the syrup. To top it off, she used blue pipe cleaner to add texture of blueberries.

This student wanted to create her favorite food which is pizza. She used cardboard as the base then glued on another smaller piece of cardboard towards the edge to represent the crust. She then painted her base red to have it be sauce then she cut the yellow string to act as the cheese. Afterward, she attached toppings she had created out of different colored paper, pom poms and foam shapes.

This student chose to make a burger for his project. He made his burger by painting sponges brown to be the buns and then added different colored paper to show different ingredients that he enjoys in his burger. Some of these other ingredients that he made included lettuce, cheese, and tomato.

This Student chose to make a German meal for her project. During the process there was a lot of trial and error for this student but she ultimately ended up making the sausage out of newsprint and a paper bag, the potatoes out of cardboard with paint added, and the doughnuts with newsprint and paint.
