Class Four

Project Description

Four our fourth lesson we continued to build on the skills from previous lessons including forming, shaping and paper mache techniques through the creation of ornamental masks. These masks were a chance to reveal aspects of students personality through art making, whether that be through form or color. These masks will have string attached and ready to be worn in our next class.

Essential Understandings

The essential understandings for this project are for students to implement the problem solving skills they  have acquired through forming, shaping and using paper mache to now form and shape using plaster gauze which are easier to use. This facilitates the creating of more complex ornamentation.

Intended Outcomes

-Students will continue to develop their ideas through sketching

-Students will continue to work on their 3D building skills through this projects

-Students will develop their design ideas through these masks

-Students will expand on their creativity through this project

-Students will learn to build off a an already 3D item to make it their own

Skills

  • Learning how to use plaster gauze

  • How to shape and form with different materials to add elements to the mask form

  • Techniques of painting on new material of plaster gauze

  • Designing 3D forms through sketching nad practice with materials

  • Problem Solving

This student loves CSU and so when we talked about different aspects we can add to our masks such as horns and ears, she got really excited and decided to make a ram. She based her initial idea off of a teacher's example that included horns and it was modified to her taste. When asked what she was making she exclaimed "I'm making a ram for CSU!"

This student gained her inspiration from our discussion about including other components as well, when we mentioned adding ears she immediately got the idea of adding big ears to the sides. When I asked her about it she stated, "When someone said ears earlier I go the idea to add big ears to my mask."

This student drew inspiration from the examples of different masquerade masks examples in class and thought it would be interesting in making a half mask. There was some problem solving by cutting the strips of plaster gauze smaller in order to achieve her desired design. this student also plans to make a crown to go with her mask.

This student really liked one of the mask  from one of the print our examples we showed. "I want to do that long nose because it looks weird." She twisted newsprint strips to form the basic elongated shape and tightened the form as she wrapped the plaster gauze around the it.

This student jumped right into this medium, which was something uncommon to see in him. They knew that they wanted to focus more on the painting aspect of the mask, and decided to just start working on the form without any thought process on what the outcome of the mask would look like.

This student wanted to make a combination of princess crown, and masquerade mask. The first  picture shows her sketching process, and ideation for her mask. She wanted to make sure her mask included a crown like Elsa's from Frozen. She decorated her mask with "crystals" and painted it all pink. She was extremely proud of her piece.
