Class Five

Project Description

We as a class will be exploring Giacometti Sculptures to create full body self portraits in sculpture form. We’ve been scaffolding on forming and shaping animals, masks, hot air balloons, etc, now we will explore forming and shaping the human form as well as learning about a historical artist that did not sculpt in naturalistic style.

Essential Understandings

The essential understandings for this project are for students to implement the problem-solving skills that they have built throughout previous lessons to form and shape using pipe cleaners and aluminum foil. This facilitates the creating of form that represents movement and expression.

Intended Outcomes

  • Students will be able to sketch their ideas

  • Students will be able to explain how they intend to create their figures

  • Students will continue working on forming and shaping techniques

  • Students will be able to reflect on themselves through a full body self portrait.

Skills

  • Learn how different materials can be used to make human forms

  • Creating dynamic poses

  • Using foil in a was that is not traditional

  • Continue to use building techniques previously learned in class

  • Learn about an artist who had an impact on the art world.

Demonstrations

"I really like playing video games, I want to make my figure sitting down playing video games. How could I make I controller? It would be cool if my figure could be holding one in its hands." Some problem solving allowed this student to render his human figure with a controller in his hands complete with buttons and a power chord! He was very excited to have been able to form a sculpture that reflected who he is.

This student got a puppy a few weeks ago which has become her source of inspiration for several projects. For her sculpture she decided not only to make herself, but also to render her puppy. She used a piece of red yarn for her puppy's leash. "I can't believe I made a sculpture of myself walking my dog!" She was so proud of her piece.

"I want my guy to be going like this!" (Proceeds to do the thinking man pose). This student instantly knew the pose that she wanted to put her figure in. She really wanted it to show someone sitting with their chin rested on their fist. It is a pose that this student does often when she is thinking. She was really excited and showed off the pose many times as she was constructing her figure.

"This is really fun! I think this is a really good project for us!" This student had a blast doing this project. She instantly knew she wanted to make her figure walking and she problem solved her way through it. She loved that she got to shape the foil with her hands and enjoyed the flexibility of the material.

"I want to make my person look like they're walking." She was able to problem-solve to build her pipe cleaner form so that she was able to wrap the aluminum foil around it to show the figures intended movement, as well as be able to adjust the figure's limbs to look the way she wanted them to.

This student wanted to create a sculpture that emphasizes her "relaxing". And you can see how she is using the techniques that she has learned through out the class to shape and form.
